FAQs
Are you currently accepting new members?
Yes! Just fill out the form at the bottom of this page. We are also currently accepting additional private training clients.
What do you train?
We train with a diverse array of weapons and fighting styles from around the world, drawing upon historical manuscripts, modern interpretations, and sports science.
Is this for self-defense?
Not intentionally. This is a combat sport, not modern combatives. We make no claims that our training is for self-defense.
Can I observe before participating?
Absolutely. Just swing by on any practice day!
What should I wear or bring to my first practices?
Clothes that are suitable for athletic activity, closed-toe shoes, and plenty of water.
When do I start sparring?
Beginners are typically allowed to do controlled sparring with their coach from day one.
Do you use real, metal swords?
We train with blunted, flexible steel that simulates the size, weight, and speed of historical weapons while remaining safe enough for high-intensity sparring.
Is this fencing?
Although HEMA / historical fencing bears some resemblance to Modern Olympic Fencing, they are very different sports with their own unique equipment, rulesets, techniques, and expectations. While we do not specifically train Modern Olympic Fencing, there is enough overlap to make cross-training useful, and we welcome MOF fencers who want to see what HEMA is all about.
Do you have merch?
Yes! You can find our merch store here.
Equipment We Recommend
Most generic protective gear and training tools are NOT suitable for our training. We use specially designed equipment to simulate unarmored weapon combat as closely as possible while still remaining as safe as possible. Click the button below to see our list of recommended equipment.
